SPRING AND THE SNOW BUNTINGS

Here on the North Shore the arrival of sping is always a special monments with all the snow bunting arriving in huge numbers.

In the old days the snow bunting were a special bird giving nurishment to the needed families of the secluded North Shore region. People use to trap the birds for food in stews.

Snow Bunting
Plectrophenax nivalis

This circumpolar bird, often called the "Snowflake," breeds further north than almost any other land bird. In severe winters large flocks descend to our northern states, where they favor the most barren places. They occasionally can be found at beach parking lots in the dead of winter searching for weed seeds.

description 6-7 1/4" (15-18 cm). Sparrow-sized. Breeding male has black back with much white on head, underparts, wings, and tail. Female similar, but duller. Winter birds have brown on crown and upperparts, have duller underparts, but still show much white in wings.

FATHER & SON ADVENTURES

As a father of 2 boys, 6 and 10 years old I beleive that fishing should be an important part of the learning process in showing the right way in respecting nature while showing the kids the ropes in fishing.

During my 2005 season I had the chance in guiding a few fathers and their sons on some great fishing adventures. The thing I noticed is how proud we are when are kids get the big one. Here are some pics Hope you enjoy

TRINITY RIVER DESCRIPTION

Trinité

General Presentation

This North Shore river provide salmon anglers with a majestic setting and winding waters abundant with superb grilse and salmon ready to surmount the river's rapids and falls on their way to the spawning grounds.

The Trinité rivers is located on the Upper North Shore of the St Lawrence, east of the Pointe des Monts, considered to be the upstream border of the Gulf of St Lawrence.

The mouth of the Trinité River is located 95 km east of the city of Baie-Comeau. It flows southward over a distance of 74 km before reaching the Gulf of St Lawrence, at the village of Baie-Trinité.

The Petite-Trinité River flows southward for a distance of 30 km finally reaching the Gulf of St Lawrence 16 miles east of the Trinité River.

Historical Background

With the arrival of the St Lawrence Company in 1929, sportsfishing on the Trinité River really began. The company owned exclusive fishing rights to the river, with access to fishing limited to company executives and their guests. During the 1950's these rights were turned over to Domtar which continued its forestry operations in the region until the 1960's when a fire destroyed its mill. The company terminated its operations but retained its fishing club.

In 1976, when Domtar's lease expired, the Trinité River finally became accessible to all Québec anglers. That year, management of the river was turned over to an organisation whose membership was drawn from the angling community (SABT), ending 50 years of private club ownership of fishing rights to the river. On April 8, 1978, the Zec de la rivière Trinité was created, under the stewardship of the Société d'aménagement de Baie-Trinité (SABT).

Management Framework

The Trinité and the Petite-Trinité rivers are classified as Atlantic salmon zec's (Zec de la Trinité), under the management of the Société d'aménagement de Baie-Trinité (SABT). It should be noted that the Petite-Trinité is also located within the Zec-Faune which is also under the management of the SABT.

Species Found in the River

Besides the Atlantic salmon, there are sea run brook trout

TROPHY LAKE TROUT ON THE FLY

A DAY ON THE RIVER by Jocelin LeBlanc

We just finished are last group of anglers for the spring lake trout season. We had 4 days to go before are brook trout Clients got in the camps so I told my brother Lucas lets go try our luck on fly rods.

It was a cloudy cool day for this time of year so we got dressed quite warm for the boat ride of about 10 miles all the way upriver to the 2 miles rapid pool. It’s a pretty nice ride upriver in the wide Outardes River until you notice the river getting narrower, and then suddenly rising up 150 ft toward the sky a huge sand filled bank a remnant of the last ice age. The shoreline is covered in young small Jack pine all of them the same size and height proof of the last forest fire that ravages the area every 10 to 15 years.

We Zig Zag in the narrow channel of the river until this wide opening with two small cold streams enter the river the area is called Two Spring brook pool. We dock the boat next to an old 15000 Year old Native Portage trail. I shout to Lucas tie up the boat to that old black spruce. I will get my rod ready this is a great spot for some serious fishing. I chose my powerful right angle anti reverse reel with intermediate sink line matched up with a Gatti FR 107 (#7 10 ft). MY choice of flies is a long Magog smelt tied tandem. My brother chooses a STH turbine reel and a Loomis GLX #8 9 ft with a slow sink line and a huge Blue Gorges fly.

I point out to the fish I see holding about 2 ft behind a big rock, my brother shoots his line upriver above the rock and make the fly swim right in front of the fish nose without even making the fish twitch. I tell Lucas to make is fly stripped the closest to the rock as possible make the fly run past the trout. Like a fine tuned predator the trout turns around and grabs the fly firmly and voila you got him keep your tip up he is big. I can see my brother is getting worried because the reel is getting empty. Tight up that disc drag I tell him it will slow down the fish a lot faster and give it some side pressure. Finally the fish slows down and he reels it in slowly then out of nowhere he bolts again upriver this time. My brother runs with him to catch up the fish finally stops in the next pool upriver called the big rock pool. I yell to Lucas to send him my way I have the cradle ready and the fish seems pretty big.

I check my watch its been 15 minutes I yell to Lucas he responds “ I know my forearm is hurting “ He’s almost here show him the way over here I will cradle the laker. But he had another idea when he saw me he jetted down river again to the Two Spring brook pool.

My brother run's again with the fish and positioned himself on the steep point that extends in the pool and tries to bring the fish in the calm bay where I can finally cradle the big fellow.

He weights in at around 18 pounds a nice river lake trout indeed. This is and excellent spot for large Northern pike and Lake trout that are here for the rendezvous with the black and red dace that make their spawning run.

BIG FLIES BIG PIKE

I discovered Northern pike fishing on the fly in the mid 90 on a fishing trip on the north shore on the Manicouagan 5 reservoir (MANIC 5). It really happened by accident while casting big flies to running Ouananiche going up the Mouchalagane river, this decent pike about 10 pound grabbed the long Carrie Stevens Style MAGOG SMELT after this began the passion for tackling those big brutes with a fly rod.

Big flies have always been my favorite whay to catch big trophy northern pike here on the north shore of Quebec here are a few of my favorite patterns all tied by myself

PINK FLASHER (RED EYE SMELT COLLECTION)

PINK FLASHER RECIPE

This pattern is responsible for more +45 inch trophy pike than any other fly I have tried or tied for pike. The red eye smelt is also available in many colors simply change the pink for your favorite color.

Black & White Striper Diver

Another great fly for pike is my striper diver available in any color, my favorite colors are natural deer hair, white, red, orange and black.
